Summer is here. For most people, this means BBQs, pool parties, and fun in the sun, but for others, it means the devastating reality that the next 100 days are often the deadliest on Texas roadways. As the temperatures rise and the days get longer, it is important to remember safe driving tips to keep the roads accident free.

Deadliest Days on the Road

Last year marked the second deadliest year on record for traffic-related fatalities. According to KCEN-TV, 4,480 people were killed on Texas roadways in 2021. Summertime is even more treacherous than other times of the year. It is unclear why these months result in more accidents and fatalities, but some suggest that it is more teen drivers on the road.

Texas leads the nation in fatal crashes involving teen drivers during the summer. Nearly 30%, according to AAA, of the teen deaths between 2010 to 2019 occurred during summertime. The alarming statistic has resulted in the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day being referred to as the “Deadliest Days of Summer.” AAA notes that new teen drivers are 3x as likely as adults to be involved in fatal crashes.

Summer Safe Driving Tips

What’s more frustrating is that many of these car accidents are preventable caused by inexperience and inattention. It is essential for everyone on the road to follow safe driving practices regardless of their age.

Safe driving tips include:

  • Never drive impaired
  • Follow the speed limit
  • Buckle up for safety
  • Put away distractions (including setting cell phones to “Do Not Disturb” or driving mode)
  • Avoid areas that are unfamiliar
  • Enrolling and completing a driver education program before taking to the road

May has already been a difficult month for Houston drivers. Several accidents have left motorists seriously injured. In a recent accident, a driver was killed after striking the back of a dump truck. Reports indicate that the driver was going at a high rate of speed before rear-ending the dump truck. The impact caused the driver’s vehicle to overturn before being engulfed in flames.
